I have been a professional musician and violin teacher in Auckland for many years with a background of orchestral, chamber music and solo performances.
My studies commenced at Auckland University and were furthered with Sándor Végh in Germany on a QEII Arts Council scholarship.
After a full time position in the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Alberta, Canada, I played part time for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and have since led the Sinfonietta Orchestra (now Auckland Chamber Orchestra) while also playing chamber music in smaller groups.
I have taught violin privately for much of my life, and at primary and secondary schools while in England.
My focus is now on the home teaching studio in Stanmore Bay.
My fundamental approach to playing and teaching embodies elements of natural movement and tone production.
I place an emphasis on muscular release and the use of arm weight. This assists a clear contact of the bow on the string
and the creation of open sounds, articulation and expression as in the human voice.
This school of playing finds its origins in the teachings of the European masters
passed on by my teacher in Germany,
of the Végh String Quartet.
I build strong positive relationships with students, incorporating a sense of fun and imagination into lessons to create
an enjoyable learning environment. My objective is to inspire them to want to play and to enjoy making music.
